UDPATE – Match over, Novak Djokovic beat Andy Murray to win his second Australian Open title, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Congratulations Nole!
Novak Djokovic has a 4-3 lead over Andy Murray in the head to head, but the three most recent matches date back to 2008/09 and were won by the Scotsman. This is tough to pick – but I’ll put my neck out and say Djokovic in five…
Rafael Nadal will extend his lead in the ATP rankings, no matter who wins. Murray can climb to 4th above Soderling if he wins. Here are all the possible ATP ranking point combinations for after the tournament:
UPDATE – Match over – Murray came back to beat Ferrer, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1, 7-6
I am sure we’d all, with the notable exception (perhaps) of David Ferrer, expected to see Rafa playing Murray here, but instead the Spanish hopes will rest on the man from Alicante.
David Ferrer has played Andy Murray 5 times before, with the honours split depending on surface – Ferrer won all 3 clay court matches and Murray both hard court ones.
On Tuesday, Roger Federer will play Stanislas Wawrinka in the fourth round, having beaten Tommy Robredo on Sunday.
Federer has generally had the better of his junior countryman, losing just once for a 6-1 leading head to head. But if he can show the same form as against Andy Roddick, Wawrinka will be in with a shouting chance.

Rafael Nadal has played Marin Cilic only once before, back in 2009 in Beijing where he was swept off the court in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) by the now 22 year old Croatian.
So it will be a very interesting encounter, particularly given the patchiness of Nadal’s win over the young Australian Bernard Tomic when he lost an unusual 4 straight games in the second set before recovering to run home with the win in three sets.
Even with the rest day, Cilic’s five setter against John Isner in the third round may also be a factor. I pick Nadal in four sets, and some very nervous moments for Rafa fans.
This will be the first time the two have met.

A lot of excitement at the Australian Open as young local hopeful Bernard Tomic will have his chance to knock off the favourite, Rafael Nadal, on Saturday.
This will surely be a prime time treat, and Rafa can expect a full onslaught from the 18 year old hailed as the next big thing downunder.

Roger Federer will play Belgian Xavier Malisse today in the third round.
Federer will be hoping this won’t be a repeat of the first time the pair met – way back in 1999! On that occasion the two were both in their teens, and Malisse pulled off a victory in four sets.
Since then though, Roger has won seven straight, and should have the measure of Malisse today, even though the Belgian was in great form when upsetting 25th seed Albert Montanes in straight sets in the previous round.
