The superlatives are pouring out as Rafael Nadal overcame world number one Roger Federer today to claim the Madrid Masters in straight sets – 6-4, 7-6.
Although he started with a few wobbles and a number of unforced errors, he came back strongly as the match progressed, overpowering Federer with strong ground strokes, solid serving and unwavering determination to win on the points that mattered most.
With this title, Nadal reclaims his No.2 position on the ATP tour and could be back at Number 1 as early as Roland Garros or more realistically Wimbledon. He becomes the undisputed leader in Masters tournaments, topping Federer and Agassi with a total of 18 titles. Not only that, his three consecutive wins on clay this season represent the first time anyone has managed to string together three masters events in a row.
For Federer, things aren’t all bad. His form improved noticeably from earlier in the clay court season, beating top challengers such as Gulbis and Ferrer on the way to the final. He earns the right to go into Roland Garros as a real contender, and a small tip in fortunes or form either way could make the French Open a lot more competitive than many are predicting – Rafa still has to turn up and win seven matches if he wishes to reclaim that title and on this week’s balance, Roger will be making him work for it.
Anyway, CAMPEÓN, congratulations. Was truly wonderful seeing you and Federer at it again like old, and long may this rivalry live on!

Nadal looks set to win Roland Garros. He seems to have excellent fitness again. It would be tough for Fed to defend two successive grand slams. He won’t likely win France but another Wimbledon victory is possible.
Rafa is a gun. With a continuously improving serve, he could be virtually unbeatable. He’ll be back on top soon, next year if not this.
