Madrid Quarterfinals – Federer vs Roddick, Nadal vs Verdasco – Live TV

Federer had a easy win over James Blake, 6-2, 6-4 and Nadal had an even easier march into the quarterfinals after Philipp Kohlschreiber withdrew through injury.

Here is today’s schedule.

Roger Federer will play American Andy Roddick in his toughest match to date in this tourney. Andy is hardly strong on clay court, but is in good form, and seems to find the Madrid surface to his liking. My pick though is that Roger will go through in two close fought sets.

Rafael Nadal will come up against fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco and we can expect Rafael will have to work a little harder for this one. Still, given his form of late, I cannot see Fer pulling off any upset today, and again expect a win in two good sets of tennis.

Federer beats Roddick – sets up semifinal with Djokovic

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic

Roger Federer manged to pull through in a tough match in the quarter finals of the Sony Ericsson Open against Andy Roddick to finally win in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Based on past matches between the two, this should have been a comfortable match for Roger – he’d won 16 of their previous 18 outings, but Roddick is in fine form these days, and Roger had to pull out some vintage (yet inconsistent) Federer tennis to make it through. After trading the first and second sets, the real breakthrough came for Federer in a critical moment in the third when luck fell his way.

With the score at 5-4, Federer fought back from 40-15 down then watched as his backhand shot clipped the net then floated elegantly over Roddick to win him the point. Roger said after the game: Continue reading “Federer beats Roddick – sets up semifinal with Djokovic”

Rafa and Roger both through to last eight of Miami

roger-federer-sony-ericsson-open1Top seeds Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open with two set victories last night.

Roger Federer had the easiest match of the two, comfortably beating the American  Taylor Dent 6-3, 6-2 in just an hour and 25 minutes. Roger will now face Andy Roddick, which should be a very interesting match given the Americans recent form. Add to that the morbid fact that it was Roddick who knocked Federer out of this same tournament, at the same quarterfinal stage last year, and we should be in for quite a treat.

Rafael Nadal on the other hand was made to fight hard for his victory over Roger’s Swiss compatriot and Olympic Gold doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka. Rafa needed two hours and 43 minutes to eke out the 7-6, 7-6 win, with the Spaniard up against the ropes on several occasions before overcoming his opponents in the tie breaks.

Rafa has what on paper looks to be an easier match than Roger’s next, as he faces the same Argentinian Juan Martín del Potro that he beat comfortably in Indian Wells a couple of weeks ago.

Nadal beats Roddick – Into Final against Murray

Rafael Nadal was in command all the way against Andy Roddick in today’s Indian Wells tennis semifinal, winning 6-4 and 7-6.

Although the outcome was never in doubt, Nadal was far from his best, and in the second set in particular seemed to ease up and played a lot of loose unforced errors off the forehand. In the end though, he was able to pull out the percentage shots when needed, and aided by his much improved service, he saw off Roddick comfortably.

We are set for a cracking final tomorrow between Nadal and Murray – Rafa is going to have to improve the consistency of his forehand if he is going to win against Andy Murray, who looked quite impressive in seeing off Roger Federer today.

Nadal beats Del Potro – Semifinal next against Andy Roddick

Rafael Nadal didn’t give any options to the Argentine Juan Martín Del Potro, beating him comfortably in two sets: 6-2 and 6-4. The Mallorcan will face the American Andy Roddick in the semifinal, after Roddick upset the Serbian Djokovic in a surprisingly easy trot in two sets.
