Results – Rafael Nadal beat Fernando Verdasco, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 and Roger Federer beat James Blake.
Rafael Nadalwill play fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, who he has beaten in every one of the eleven matches they have played before – including that 5h10m classic semifinal in 2009 when Rafa went on to win the Australian Open.
Roger Federer has played James Blake 10 times before, with the American’s only win coming at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Federer must be solid favourite to take this out in straight sets, even though Blake has played well recently.

Having helped Spain to a 2-0 lead in the Davis Cup rubber on the first day, Rafa will next play Xavier Malisse on Sunday.
If the doubles team of Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco win today, then there will be nothing but pride at stake, in which case the match will be shortened to three sets.
If the Spanish pair lose, Nadal will have the opportunity to claim the rubber in five sets on Sunday.

Rafael Nadal will have to beat his fellow Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco if he is to claim a spot in the semifinals.
Roger Federer already booked his slot in the semis last night (beating Soderling in straight sets) so that means we are just three matches away from the anticipated Nadal vs Federer final!
On paper, Nadal should beat Verdasco, as he has on all ten previous occasions that the two met. But those of us who remember the epic Aussie Open semifinal of 2009 know that Verdasco has it in him to run Nadal very hard indeed. I pick Nadal to battle through in four.

After an incomprehensible 11 month drought, Rafa is well and truly back with a vengeance!
And what a way to win – poor Verdasco looked like a struggling amateur on court compared to mighty Rafa in his very best clay court form, hammering home the victory in a ridiculous 6-0, 6-1.
Rafa’s now resting in Mallorca, preparing for Rome after having taking the decision to sit out Godo in Barcelona.
Well, I have to say I am damned pleased that he will take a break – it shows he is learning from last year’s bad experience and will be better prepared for the great events in Rome, Madrid and of course Paris in the coming weeks.
It shows all the signs of being an immense season for him. Should we even dare to dream of four from four?
Federer had a easy win over James Blake, 6-2, 6-4 and Nadal had an even easier march into the quarterfinals after Philipp Kohlschreiber withdrew through injury.
Here is today’s schedule.
Roger Federer will play American Andy Roddick in his toughest match to date in this tourney. Andy is hardly strong on clay court, but is in good form, and seems to find the Madrid surface to his liking. My pick though is that Roger will go through in two close fought sets.
Rafael Nadal will come up against fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco and we can expect Rafael will have to work a little harder for this one. Still, given his form of late, I cannot see Fer pulling off any upset today, and again expect a win in two good sets of tennis.

With three of the four top seeds through, we’re in for a great weekend of tennis in Rome
Roger Federer set up his semifinal encounter with Novak Djokovic with a hard fought win over Mischa Zverev 7-6, 6-2. Although Zverev played some very impressive tennis, particurlarly in the first set, Roger has raised his game this tournament and wasn’t going to let an 85th ranked pretender stand in his way.
Federer will be looking to avenge his recent semifinal loss to Djokovic in Miami, and although the Serb should be the favourite on recent form, I think this might be the day that Roger pulls one back. My prediction – Fed in three.
Rafael Nadal did not play at his best yesterday, but as is so often the case in recent months, he seemed to be able to cruise at just the right level to never leave the final result in doubt. Verdasco looked ominous early on, but Rafa managed to close down that mighty Fer forehand by moving him around the court, and with a patient back court display was able to win comfortably – 6-3, 6-3.
Rafa should not have any trouble dealing with Gonzalez – he has not lost to the Chilean since 2007, and never on clay. I expect Nadal to win in two sets, but we’ll enjoy some long rallies and not a few impressive forehand winners from Fernando.

Roger Federer first – he seems to be really coming on strong this week, and he was all over Radek Stepanek, winning 6-4, 6-1. I am sure was expecting that he would be playing Gilles Simon today. But the Frenchman played badly indeed yesterday, with too many unforced errors, and was forced out by German qualifier, Mischa Zverev. Zverev has done very well to get this far, but I just don’t see him causing another upset – Fed in two, in just over an hour is my pick.

Rafael Nadal was immense. He himself said afterwards that this was his one of his best matches on clay – and that’s saying something. Rafa was in awesome form, losing just the first game then following up with 12 in a row to crush Robin Soderling 6-1, 6-0. He will be really challenged though today against Fernando Verdasco – let’s see if Rafa’s famous pysche can change up a gear to a higher level of opposition. My pick is Rafa in two, but not without some very long tight games and a few breaks.
Schedule wise – the first match of the day will be Del Potro vs Djokovic (Update: won by Djokovic).
Federer then Nadal follow on thereafter against their respective opponents, so we’ll probably see Federer start around 3pm local, and Nadal at perhaps 5…let’s see how they all go.

UPDATE: Start of play delayed due to rain – finally started at 3:30pm local time (CEST).
Federer’s match was up first on the revised schedule, with Verdasco vs Ferrer moved to a second court, same time. Nadal came on immediately after the conclusion of Federer’s match, but rain stopped play after just one game.

Stanislas Wawrinka vs Roger Federer (game now over, Wawrinka won 6-4, 7-5)
Rafael Nadal vs Nicolas Lapentti (finished day with partial 0-1 in first set for Lapentti)
As always, refer to this post on how to watch live tennis over the internet should you need more information or assistance. Good luck!
Roger Federer looked a little shaky at times, losing the second set to a strong Fernando Gonzalez, but steadied himself to finish strongly to win 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
In the next round Federer will play the in-form Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco for a place in the quarter finals. Roger won both previous encounters between the two (2005 and 2008, both times on clay), but Fernando has really picked his game up a few levels, with the best example being the epic five set battle that he barely lost to Rafa Nadal in the Australian Open semifinal.
