UPDATE – Match over, Federer won 6-0, 6-2 and in doubles, Nadal and Lopez won 7-5 6-7(3), 10-8
Roger Federer has a 5-0 in the head to head, which dates back to 2002, so the 31 year old Argentinian will have to come up with something very special to top Roger today.
Also today – Rafael Nadal and partner Marc Lopez will play doubles, and if they win will go into the semifinals where their opposition could possibly be Roger Federer with his compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka . Just a win away for either pair…

Nadal will play his first singles match on Saturday – against World No. 162, South African Rik de Voest.
Rafa will play the 30 year old de Voest in the second round, having received a bye in the first.
The two have never met before, and it should be an easy start to the tournament for the Mallorcan. But stranger things have happened, and I will enjoy seeing how Rafa’s form is after his busy travel and playing schedule over the last week.
Roger Federer will start with singles tomorrow against Igor Andreev, who upset Kei Nishikori in the first round.

Nadal and Federer will play their first matches in the weekend (Saturday 12th March), having received a bye for the first round.
A quick glance at the draw shows that Rafa and Roger would have to overcome the following theoretical (if goes according to seed) opponents if they are to meet in the final:
Rafael Nadal:
Pere Riba, Juan Monaco, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, David Ferrer, Robin Soderling
Roger Federer:
Kei Nishikori, Juan Ignacio Chela, Mardy Fish, Tomas Berdych, Novak Djokovic
Nadal is joining up with the rest of his team in Charleroi, Belgium to head to Indian Wells by private jet.
He’ll make a first stop along the way in Oregon to inaugurate the new Matthew Knight Arena.
Rafa will be joined by Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova for the “NIKE Clash of the Champions” event, set for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8. Serena Williams was to have participated in the event, but pulled out due to injury.
The Mallorcan will share the jet with six others: Francis Roig, his second trainer; physiotherapist Rafael Maymó; his Nike agent Jordi Robert; Benito Pérez Barbadillo – PR; and two friends, Joan Suasi and Marc López. Rafa will play doubles with Marc López at Indian Wells, the first doubles competition of the year
The event will feature Sharapova and Azarenka playing a singles set, followed by a mixed doubles set and finishing with a much awaited men’s singles set between Roger and Rafa.
Rafa will start at Indian Wells next weekend as he is exempt from the first round as top seed.
He’ll take advantage of the days in between to play some golf with Fred Couples.
Once again, the luck of the draw inspires confidence in a renewal of the Rafa-Roger rivalry – let’s see if the players can do their part!

Roger had a disappointing event at Indian Wells, crashing out in the quarterfinals to Baghdatis.
You’d have to say that Rafa should have been pleased with a semi and a doubles win – though it still must hurt not to defend yet another title from that epic era last year when he cleaned up on every surface.
Nadal will start on Friday for his first ever match against Taylor Tent of USA. Federer debuts Saturday against Nicolás Lapentti.

Number one Federer is out. Number two Djokovic is out. Rafa rampages on as we head in to the business end of the tourney!
Berdych used to be a guy who could beat Nadal. In fact he did so three times in a row back in 2005/06, before Rafa took over and became the dominant force, with five wins in a row, and never a set dropped again…
So which is will it be tonight? Nadal-Berdych encounters of old, or the recent dynamic?
I’m thinking Rafa is looking gooood, and with the hype of the highway clearing ahead of him, I think he’ll be phenomenal. Here’s hoping
The game will come on some time after 7:30 pm local time, that’s a sleep destroying 2:30am for those of us on GMT time – los pobres Espanyoles sufrirán aún más – a partir de los 3:30 am…
