UPDATE: Results – Rafael Nadal beat Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 and Roger Federer beat Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-2, 6-2
Rafael Nadal has an 8-2 lead in the head to head over Feliciano Lopez, and although this will be a tougher match than he has had so far, hopefully he can change up a gear and progress.
Roger Federer will play young Australian Bernard Tomic for just the second time, having seen him off last year in the Davis Cup tie between their two countries. On that occasion Tomic showed a lot of promise, taking the third set from Federer before losing in four sets.

UPDATE – Results: Rafael Nadal beat Lukas Lacko 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 and Roger Federer beat Ivo Karlovic 7-6, 7-5, 6-3
Rafael Nadal will play the Slovak, Lukas Lacko for the third time, having dropped just a set (albeit a “donut” at Qatar last year) in their two previous matches.
Roger Federer on the other hand has a more difficult match against the big serving Croat, Ivo Karlovic. Fed has only lost once in the ten occasions that the two have met previously.

Roger Federer vs Ivo Karlovic, immediately following Nadal’s match
UPDATE – Nadal fought back to win 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 while Federer and Wawrinka won 6-1, 7-5 in doubles.
Rafael Nadal’s match against Croatian Ivo Karlovic will be the toughest challenge yet at Indian Wells for the Mallorcan this year.
Although he is ranked only 239 in the world right now, that is due to the six months Karlovic was out and recovering from injury in 2010. Rafa has always had a tough time overcoming the big server, who is a former top twenty player.
Nadal has a 3-0 in the head to head – all have been well contested matches.
Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka finally get their chance to play for a spot in the semis. If they can beat Mark Knowles of the Bahamas and Michal Mertinak (Slovakia) we will be able to look forward to them playing Nadal and Lopez.

The antipasto has been served, and the appetizer looks even tastier.
Getting up in the middle of the night European time turned out to be a good decision, as Nadal vs Karlovic was an engaging treat. The blasting services of the big Croat came thundering in again and again, with 28 serves and a whole lot more that the Mallorcan could barely deal with.
But you can see Nadal slowly coming back to his very best. Playing each point with the maximum concentration and intensity of old, you can feel his confidence bubbling to it’s effervescent best and his 4-6, 6-6, 6-4, 6-4 win was a reflection of that.
So… Murray vs Nadal – what can we expect?
Andy hasn’t lost a set so far in the Australian, and he is moving around the court better than anybody. It’s going to be a battle of patience, strength, speed, skill and endurance of the very highest level.
I pick Nadal to just squeeze out the Scot in five sets, another Open classic.

UPDATE – Match over, Nadal won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4
With Rafa safely past his first major obstacle in Phillip Kohlschreiber, he faces an enormous one next against the giant Croat, Ivo Karlovic.
Although Nadal has had the better of his 6’10″ opponent in their previous two encounters, he won’t be taking the encounter lightly, saying he would have to be more aggressive against Karlovic:
“Always a really difficult opponent, no, because the match is decided in a few points.”
“So the thing is to concentrate hard on my serve all the time and try to convert the small opportunities that I can have on the return. That’s it.”
The match starts after the Andy Murray/John Isner match which will be a great opener. So we can expect Nadal and Karlovic on the court sometime after 12 midday local time, 1am GMT.

The big news of course was the ousting of Andy Murray by Juan Monaco – well, Andy’s had a great run this year and perhaps this is just a pause in his momentum towards the top three (or two). I expect the few extra days rest will do him a lot of good, and we’ll see some great tennis from him in the slightly faster courts of Madrid.
Roger Federer had a tough match, and faced some solid resistance from Karlovic, but his game was steady, and he was able to win easily, 6-4, 6-4.
Rafael Nadal looked even stronger, seeing off Andreas Seppi quickly in an hour and twenty, and with just a minor bump early on with a loss of service before a typically concentrated performance where he left the Italian with no chances whatsoever to get into the game.
After a humdinger first up match today (carried over from yesterday due to rain delays) between Andy Murray and clay court specialist Juan Monaco, we’ll be seeing Roger Federer challenged by big serving Croat, Ivo Karlovic. Karlovic beat Federer in Cincinatti last year, so has proved he has it in him, though a slow clay court will be less in his favour, and indeed Federer has won all the other seven previous encounters between the two.
Then straight after that, Rafael Nadal will face the Italian Andreas Seppi. Amazingly, these two have only played three times previously on the tour, and surprise, surprise, Seppi won the most recent encounter – in Rotterdam last year – in three sets. Again, the surface and form will make all the difference, and Rafa should enjoy this plate of revenge served cold on clay.
Quite an afternoon of tennis, and here are the best links we can find at NadalVersusFederer.com. We’ll update these as the games start, as these days there is a lot of chopping, changing and cutting of streams:
