So who will it be? The five time reigning veteran with his elegant strokeplay or the first time grandslam finalist, just 20 years old, with the big serves and powerful ground shots?us-open-tennis

Either way this could be quite a match!

The match starts at 4 pm local time, 8 pm GMT.

UPDATE – del Potro beat Nadal 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, Federer beat Djokovic 7-6, 7-5, 7-5

Sunday is usually “finals day” at the US Open and it sure feels like we’ve been served up a double dish this year!us-open-tennis

With the rain delays having played havoc with the schedule, we’ll have two humdinger semis today, each of which are worthy of final day billing. And despite Fed’s billing as favourite to take out his sixth straight title, the truth is all four players have a strong chance of going all the way.

First up, at 12am local time, 4pm GMT is Nadal’s fourth match of the year against the lanky Argentinian, Juan Martin del Potro. Although Nadal leads the all time head to head 4 matches to 2, the South American has bested Rafa in their last two encounters at Miami and Montreal. Del Potro’s game is well suited to the fast US Open courts, but Nadal’s focus and determination, and bolstering game fitness will see him through – I pick the Mallorcan in 4 sets.

Federer will come on at 4:30pm local time, 8:30pm GMT or the conclusion of Nadal’s match. He’s had the better of Novak Djokovic 8-4 in the past, and beaten him in the final (2007) and semi (2008) of the US Open in recent years to claim the title. Nole has it in him to pull an upset, but the Fed has been looking unbeatable in recent months, and I fully expect a Federer victory, but not without a gargantuan struggle to 5 sets.

Roland Garros Final 2009 – Federer vs Soderling – Live TV

Roland Garros - French Open 2009

TV links at end of this post.

Well who would have picked it? We all felt fairly sure of ourselves that at least one of our two favourite players would be featured in Sunday’s final, but I think you would have received a few sniggers if you had said before the show started that Roger would make it through but not Rafa!

Roger Federer reached the final for the fourth year in the row after a tight five set battle over Juan Martín del Potro, finally winning 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4.

Robin Soderling will be in his first Grand Slam final after a dream tournament in which he has overcome Rafael Nadal, Nikolay Davydenko and Fernando Gonzalez in convincing fashion.

It will be a royal battle, and the Swede will not change his style – he has nothing to lose and everything to prove, and we can expect him to come out swinging, and really take the match to Roger.

My pick is for the experience and intense desire of Roger to be the telling factors – a win in four sets to the Swiss, 14 Grand Slams, and finally a career collection of all four biggies. Wow. Let’s see if he can do it! We at Nadal vs Federer will be shouting the loudest!

The match will be on Sunday at 3pm local time

Roland Garros – Federer vs del Potro, Soderling vs Gonzalez

UPDATE – Game over, Federer won 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4.

Day Thirteen (Friday, June 3rd, 2009) at the French Open is semifinal day in the men’s draw, and Roger Federer will play del Potro as the only survivor from the top four seeds.

Roger Federer reached his 20th consecutive Grand Slam semifinal on Wednesday by beating France’s Gael Monfils 7-6 (8/6), 6-2, 6-4. With his 5-0 lifetime record over del Potro, and a gradual improvement in form as the tourney has progressed, he is now looking very good to claim his one missing Grand Slam.

The match is the second one on today’s Roland Garros schedule of play (started about 5pm local time).

Federer loses to Djokovic

Roger Federer’s game fell apart half way through the match as he succumbed in three sets, 3-6 6-2 6-3 to a much rejuvenated Novak Djokovic.

Roger started strongly, and it looked like he could be on his way to his first final since the Australian Open.

But his form dropped quickly in the second set, and with it Federer lost his temper, smashing his racquet and Djokovic was calm enough to take advantage of the situation and power through to Sunday’s final.

Djokovic will face the winner of the second semifinal, which will take place in a few hours, between Murray and Nadal-slayer Juan Martin del Potro.

Rafa is human! – Loses to Del Potro and is out of Miami

Down and Out in Miami

Down and Out in Miami

No miraculous comeback against an Argentinian this time!

Rafael Nadal showed he was human by having a “bad day at the office” and despite fighting for his life in typical fashion, was just not good enough on the day against a powerful Del Potro who really took the game to the world number one.

For a while, it looked like we could witness a repeat performance of Nadal’s heroics against that other Argentinian, David Nalbandian who he beat at Indian Wells after saving five match points. But this time, and after staving off three match points, Rafael Nadal finally succumbed in the third set tie breaker, losing to Juan Martín Del Potro by 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.

Rafa made the following comments after the match at the press conference:

“The match was amazing for those who were watching it, but for me it was a catastrophe. I had the match in my hands and now, I have no excuses, that’s the honest truth.”

“I simply played real bad,  I wasn’t at the top of my game, and for me it was especially difficult after losing a 3-0 advantage… it’s not something that happens to me normally.”

“If I would have won, it would have been unfair because he played better than me. He’s the number 7 in the world, he’s simply an excellent player.”

Next up for Rafa will now be start of the clay court season, with the Monte Monte Carlo Master Series beginning  on April 13th.

“The beginning of the clay season is a great motivation for me and I feel very happy to go back there and do the best I can,”

Rafa and Roger both through to last eight of Miami

roger-federer-sony-ericsson-open1Top seeds Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open with two set victories last night.

Roger Federer had the easiest match of the two, comfortably beating the American  Taylor Dent 6-3, 6-2 in just an hour and 25 minutes. Roger will now face Andy Roddick, which should be a very interesting match given the Americans recent form. Add to that the morbid fact that it was Roddick who knocked Federer out of this same tournament, at the same quarterfinal stage last year, and we should be in for quite a treat.

Rafael Nadal on the other hand was made to fight hard for his victory over Roger’s Swiss compatriot and Olympic Gold doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka. Rafa needed two hours and 43 minutes to eke out the 7-6, 7-6 win, with the Spaniard up against the ropes on several occasions before overcoming his opponents in the tie breaks.

Rafa has what on paper looks to be an easier match than Roger’s next, as he faces the same Argentinian Juan Martín del Potro that he beat comfortably in Indian Wells a couple of weeks ago.

Nadal beats Del Potro – Semifinal next against Andy Roddick

Rafael Nadal didn’t give any options to the Argentine Juan Martín Del Potro, beating him comfortably in two sets: 6-2 and 6-4. The Mallorcan will face the American Andy Roddick in the semifinal, after Roddick upset the Serbian Djokovic in a surprisingly easy trot in two sets.
