Update Madrid Masters 2010: Matches over, Nadal and Federer both won
Rafa and Roger overcame Isner and Wawrinka respectively to reach the final eight. Can they win two more matches each and give us a repeat Nadal vs Federer final at Madrid?
Nadal has a 5-1 head to head advantage over Monfils, and has not lost to him (or this season to anyone) on clay.
My pick is that Rafa will win in straight sets.
Ernests Gulbis ATP Profile
Federer has probably the tougher battle of the two. Gulbis has been the revelation of this clay season with wins over Federer himself, Baghdatis and Lopez amongst others in Rome.
I pick Federer to come through in three sets after a right royal battle along the way. Match of the tournament so far.

Rafa faces six foot nine of big serving American John Isner whilst Roger plays fellow countryman, Stanislas Wawrinka.
Both should overcome their challenges.
Nadal was pushed to three sets before finally overcoming Isner at Indian Wells this year, but despite his top 20 ranking, the American has a losing overall record on clay and will struggle against the King of that surface.
Federer has a 3-1 record over Wawrinka, but the number 23 had a crucial win in their only previous clay encounter – at Montecarlo last year.
Stanislas Wawrinka - Link to ATP Profile
That will give him confidence and this will be a total battle which I pick Roger to come through in three sets.

Well if Rafa faces one challenge for sure, it will be to pronounce his opponent’s name.
Oleksandr DOLGOPOLOV JR. from Ukraine has the honour of trying to knock Nadal off his throne.
Unbeaten this year at two tournaments, Rafa must face this new clay court challenge with joy.

Roger Federer has played the German Benjamin Becker just once before, with a comfortable win in 2006, But Federer is on a bad run and will be very anxious about turning things around with a big win.
Having been knocked out of the Estoril Open by the eventual winner Albert Montanes, Roger Federer will be looking for some serious court time this week.
As the defending champion, he has 1000 points at stake and will surely be aware that Rafa has a big chance in the coming month to accumulate massive amounts of points.

The good news is that with Djokovic out (no, that’s not the good news…), Nadal has been ranked at number 2, making a rematch of last year’s Federer vs Nadal final possible. Could we be so lucky?
Well it would be a brave man who’d bet against Rafa reaching the final. His form at Montecarlo was superhuman, at Rome merely human but ultimately unbeatable to those who showed up.
The test will be whether those knees are really as good and injury free as the Nadal camp is letting on, and whether he can maintain the same level at the higher altitude of Madrid, where the balls bounce higher and longer.
In the case of Federer? This time you’d be a brave man to bet on Roger making the final. His form has been simply awful in the clay court season, and early exits to the likes of Gulbis, Montanes (semi) have raised question marks as to whether he can raise the bar to defend his Madrid and French titles.
But before making the finals, we have a whole lot of tennis to enjoy:). Rafa could play Isner, Monfils, Tsonga, Soderling and Verdasco to name just a few of the tough challenges along the way, while Federer has Wawrinka, Murray, Youzhny, Murray, Ferrer and Cilic on his side of the draw. Let’s hope he can turn it around…
