Charity Event – Nadal vs Federer in Zurich

UPDATE: Match over, Roger Federer took out the “home” leg of the two part charity event by beating Rafael Nadal in the “Match for Africa” in Zurich, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

See post/live TV links for return match in Madrid here.

Roger and Rafa twice in two days – GUARANTEED! (well, weather allowing…)

There have only been four matches between the two champs over the last two years, so what great news to be able to enjoy them playing twice  in aid of their respective foundations.

Federer will play Nadal firstly in Zurich on the 21st of December. The two will then catch a shared flight to Madrid where they will play the next day (Dec 22nd) 18:00 GMT.

Below are the best links for free TV streams over internet that we could find in our wide scan and evaluation of available sources.

Fed is Back! Roger beats Rafa to win in Madrid

In a clinical and tough performance today, Roger Federer broke Rafael Nadal’s run of supremacy, winning 6-4, 6-4 to claim the Madrid Masters Series tournament.

What this means:

- Roger Federer is not washed out, out-psyched, past-it and destined to Daddy-hood and Swiss cheese

- Rafael Nadal is beatable on clay. His 33 match winning streak broken, his mantle of invincibility has slipped just a little, and suddenly it seems he may have to do more than just turn up to claim his fifth consecutive Roland Garros

- Roger and Rafa are back even on Masters Series titles – 15 a piece, and the race is on between the two to top Agassi’s all time record 17 titles

- Despite the Scot and the Serb nipping at the heels of the Swiss, it is not yet time to call an end to the Nadal/Federer tennis oligopoly. Roger is still the deputy/chief-in-waiting.

What this does not mean:

- Rafael Nadal’s reign is not over – He remains unchallenged as the undisputed number one of world tennis and king of clay.

- Roger is not favourite for Roland Garros – there is a long way from the fast dry surface at altidude of three-set tennis at Madrid to the five setter clay court classics of Paris. Rafa will sleep well tonight, dreaming of even bounces and grinding rivals into the dust.

- Roger has not recovered the psychological edge he was missing over Rafa. No way. Nadal recovered from the longest ever three set Masters Series match less than 24 hours before this final, and put up a stern challenge. One had the feeling that with every passing point of the second set today, he was playing himself back into the match. But two sets were not enough to get the fists pumping and the fiery red blood running on time today.

That said…

Although I’m more a Nadal fan than a Federer one, I don’t feel at all bad about the outcome of today’s final.

It is if a cosmic balance in the tennis universe has tipped back closer to it’s delicate equilibrium, and that things are somehow back as they should be.

It was too soon to write off the Nadal vs Federer experience, and may this be just the beginning of a mature and fitting later chapter to this classic tennis saga.

Vamos Rafa, come on Federer, and thanks for giving us so much to enjoy – bring on Roland Garros!

Madrid Final 2009 – Nadal vs Federer – Live TV

TV links at end of this post.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will play the final of the Madrid Masters Series today.

The head-to-head results between the two show a 9-1 career advantage for Nadal over Federer on clay, with the one result in Fed’s favour being in Hamburg 2007.

My pick for today is for a humdinger match, with Federer taking advantage of Nadal’s fatigue, but with the Mallorcan just two strong mentally and physically for the former number one. Rafa in three.

Following are the best live TV links – will be updated leading in to start time so return and refresh, or leave a comment if you have a problem or suggestion.

Madrid Quarterfinals – Federer vs Roddick, Nadal vs Verdasco – Live TV

Federer had a easy win over James Blake, 6-2, 6-4 and Nadal had an even easier march into the quarterfinals after Philipp Kohlschreiber withdrew through injury.

Here is today’s schedule.

Roger Federer will play American Andy Roddick in his toughest match to date in this tourney. Andy is hardly strong on clay court, but is in good form, and seems to find the Madrid surface to his liking. My pick though is that Roger will go through in two close fought sets.

Rafael Nadal will come up against fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco and we can expect Rafael will have to work a little harder for this one. Still, given his form of late, I cannot see Fer pulling off any upset today, and again expect a win in two good sets of tennis.

Madrid – Federer vs Blake, Nadal vs Kohlschreiber – Live TV

With Nadal (over Melzer, 6-3, 6-1) and Federer (6-1, 7-5 over Soderling) having made light work of their second round opponents, they move on to more challenging fare today at Madrid.

Link to today’s schedule: here.

Roger Federer will face American James Blake after the completion of the Murray vs Robredo match which starts at midday local time. So Fed should come on some time after 1pm depending on the length of what should be a cracker between the Scot and the Spaniard.

Rafael Nadal will play Philipp Kohlschreiber in the evening session – not before 8pm local time.

Here are the best links we can find at NadalvsFederer.com. Will try and keep them updated and working –  leave a quick comment (registration not required) if you have a problem or can suggest a better link:

Madrid – Federer vs Soderling – Live TV

Roger Federer will kick off his Madrid tournament Tuesday with a second round match against Robin Soderling. Federer’s played the Swede eight times in the past and only ever dropped one set, so it is hard to see him having a lot of trouble in this one.

Rafael Nadal starts the tournament on Wednesday against Jurgen Melzer or Albert Montanes, having had a bye in the first round (as did Federer).
