One thing for sure is that we’ll see a fantastic match of tennis in Sunday’s Australian Open final. What are the points to consider in who will win? Here is how they stand:
In Nole’s favour:
- “Owned” Rafa in 2011, destroying him in six finals, dropping only three sets
- Has won twice at Australian Open, making this his most successful Major
- Undisputed Number One, riding high on confidence
- Superb all round game, his serve and backhand are superior to Nadal’s, and is able to match him in defensive play. Spectacular form in attacking from the base line.
In Rafa’s favour:
- Despite the memory of 2011, still leads the head to head 16-13. Rafa remembers beating Djokovic, if not the 2011 model Djokovic
- An extra rest day, with a relatively easy 4 set win compared to Nole’s almost five hour marathon finishing 43 hours before final time
- Ten Grand Slams, 14 finals – superior experience when it comes to the crunch of five set Majors
- Enormous confidence boost from a fantastic win over Fed in the semis.
- The guy you just cannot grind down over five sets, the rough and tumble spirit of body and mind that will see him win
Yes, I pick Rafa to win this one, and start a great year with Majors in Australia, France, and possibly Wimbledon.

Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic, Sunday, 7:30pm (8:30am GMT)
Defending champion, Novak Djokovic must surely now rate as the hot favourite given his 2011 form and the 6-4 lead in the head to head, but Andy Murray has had a running start to the year and could represent a tough hurdle for the Serb.
The same pair met in last year’s final, with Djokovic overcoming Murray in straight sets (6-4, 6-2, 6-3).

UPDATE – Result: Federer and Nadal both lost. Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1 and David Ferrer beat an injury-troubled Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-2. The two will now meet for the 3rd place play off on Saturday.
A great chance to see which of our champions will be first to shake off the winter cobwebs for the 2012 season. Prize money of USD 250,000 is at stake.
By virtue of their past performances and status, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have been given direct access to the semifinals.
Federer will then play Djokovic, who was able to beat Monfils in the play off for the third slot, while Rafa will get play Ferrer, who overcame Tsonga.
Hope the two can make it through to what would be a December 31st final – nice way to “end” the year!

Abu Dhabi – Live TV Streams (Free) – December 30th
Today at 12:30pm GMT we will find out the draw for the finals. Will Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal fall in the same round robin group?
Last year Roger Federer beat the then No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the final. This year, Rafa has chosen again to sit out Paris in order to prepare for the finals, whilst Fed had the best possible warm up by claiming his first Paris Masters title.
And then there is the unknown factor – how will Novak Djokovic’s shoulder be, and can the Serb top one of the greatest tennis season’s ever with yet another title?
BBC will have a live audio feed of the draw, which you can listen in on here:
Result – Novak Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal to claim his first US Open title. Congratulations Nole on a sensational match and victory.
Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal have played a grand total of 28 times, with the Spaniard still holding out with a 16-12 lead, despite Nole’s sensational inroads in 2011, when he has won five straight.
Rafa will have to be at his very best today, and probably even then hope Djokovic drops form for a few patches if he is to win, such has been his play of late. I pick five sets, and Nadal to just come through on experience and will to win.

Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic, Monday 4pm (8pm GMT)
UPDATE: Novak Djokovic came back from 2 sets and 2 match points down to beat Roger Federer, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5. Rafael Nadal beat Andy Murray, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to join Djokovic in Monday’s final
Roger Federer has a 14-9 lead over Novak Djokovic, and beat him the last time they met (in the French Open this year). So who will it be – the greatest player in history of the man headed for one of the best years ever seen in the history of the sport?
With a small triumph of hope over logic, I’m picking Fed to come out scorching and knock off Nole in a stunning three straight sets.
Rafa Nadal will be relieved to have come through against Roddick with ease, saving energy for the tough match against Andy Murray.
Again, I pick our man in straight sets, leaving both our champions fresh for Monday’s Nadal vs Federer final.

Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic, Saturday 12pm (4pm GMT) (started late due to rain) Rafael Nadal vs Andy Murray, at conclusion of first semi. Will be after 5:00pm (9:00pm GMT)
UPDATE – Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-0 after the Serb retired with a sore shoulder.
Can Novak Djokovic continue with his absolutely phenomonal year and make it a 100% success rate at Masters events in 2011 (he did not play in Monte-Carlo, which Rafa won), or will Andy Murray overcome the great Serb, who leads 6-3 in the head to head?
It will surely to be get a snapshot of how big the difference really is amongst the top four – I’m going to step out on a limb and predict an upset – Murray in straight sets.
Why? All winning streaks end, and Nole’s time is up – no rhyme nor reason, just a feeling
