Well Rafa has fallen by the wayside (beaten 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 by Melzer) but Roger survived to fight another day – and fight it will be against world No. 5 Robin Soderling.
Federer’s good form and a 13-1 head to head in his favour would seem to make him favourite, but I am not betting my life on tomorrow’s outcome. Instead, I’ll be enjoying some great tennis and hoping for Fed to make it through.

Roger Federer vs Robin Soderling – I’m really looking forward to this match, as I know Federer will come out very aggressively to avenge his loss in Roland Garros.
That was the only time the Swede has been able to beat Federer in 13 matches – let’s see how things go tonight but I pick Roger to battle through in five sets.
Going to be so much fun!

The Wimbledon 2010 draw has just been held, and of our two Number One’s, Roger Federer was given the tougher draw.
Roger’s going to have to get past some really hard grass court players if he is to achieve a record-equaling seventh Wimbledon title.
The biggest three obstacles for Federer are:
- Andy Roddick (last year’s finalist)
- Novak Djokovic (world number three)
- Lleyton Hewitt (former world number one, Wimbledon champion, and victor over Federer in last week’s Halle final.
Rafael Nadal has probably two serious contenders if he is to reach a final and challenge to repeat his 2008 title:
- Andy Murray – world number four and home crowd favourite
- Robin Soderling – in form Roland Garros finalist
Federer will start on Monday against Colombia’s 65th-ranked Alejandro Falla. He has never lost a set in the four previous occasions he has played Falla, the most recent win being last week at Halle.
Nadal will plays Kei Nishikori first up – they have met only once before, at Queens in 2008, when Nadal managed to win, despite dropping a set against the young Japanese promise.
So who is your pick for the Wimbledon Championships 2010?
I’m going to be gunning for a Federer vs Nadal final (surprise!).
If both make it that far, I seriously believe it will come down to determination, endurance and that Rafa will take it out 3 sets to 1.
Suspect I might regret being so brave before the tourney even starts .
Rafael Nadal beat Robin Soderling of Sweden 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 to reclaim his French Open crown, and the ATP world Number One ranking.
If a year ago the world seemed to change when Nadal lost to Soderling in the fourth round of Roland Garros, today it took another turn.
Revitalised and with a redesigned game, Rafa came out firing and completed the victory over the Swede with complete control and conviction.
In so doing, he managed to repeat his 2008 performance of winning the crown without dropping a set, and has proved without a doubt that he is deserving of the number one ranking which will be his again on Monday.
Felicidades, Rafa, grandissimo!
P.S., that makes 19 out of the last 21 Grand Slams for Rafa and Roger!

If you cannot have a Nadal vs Federer at the French Open, then surely in 2010 Nadal vs Soderling is the best of the best. Not only did the Swede bundle Rafa out of Roland Garros last year for his only ever loss at the event, he has shown he is in top form this year by humbling the great Roger Federer.
The outcome tomorrow is 50/50 to me. Rafa is 3-2 up in the head to head, with the losses coming in the last two meetings – Roland Garros last year and at the year end finals in London.
So what will it come down to? If Soderling can pound and expose Nadal’s forehand, and keep the points short he will be in for a fighting chance. If we get rain on Sunday as the forecasts predict, that will make the court heavier, suiting the Swede.
Finally though, I think this one will come down to nerves, endurance and sheer determination. Neither player is lacking on these counts, but surely the experience and intensity of Rafa could be the trump card. I pick Rafa in five, an epic blockbuster of a match. Get the popcorn, beer or champagne ready, we’re in for quite a ride!

Jurgen Melzer ATP Profile
Two unexpected encounters at the semifinals today in Roland Garros.
If all had run to form we would be seeing Federer against Murray and Nadal against Djokovic. Of the four, only Nadal managed to keep his date at the main table this year, and he should have a straight forward win over the Austrian veteran Jurgen Melzer.
Roger Federer was of course knocked out by Robin Soderling, who has just beaten Tomas Berdych to repeat his final appearance of last year.
I pick Nadal in three.

Robin Soderling has crashed the party for the second year running.
His strong serve, steely nerves and talented shotmaking were enough to topple the world Number One and defending champion today at Roland Garros – 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.
With this, Federer’s incredible run of 23 straight Grand Slam semifinals comes to an end. Take a moment to appreciate the greatness of this feat – it is safe to say that this is one record that will probably never ever be beaten.
Also, of course, Robin Soderling has played the villain part in the long running drama series that is Nadal vs Federer – robbing us of a repeat of the 2006-2008 finals between the two greats. But credit where it is due, the Swede deserves it, and if he and if Rafa make it to the final it will be one hell of a revenge opportunity for the Mallorcan as pay back for last year’s shock fourth round exit to Soderling.
Lastly, and perhaps getting ahead of ourselves a little, Nadal has a golden opportunity to reclaim the World Number One ranking – if he wins Roland Garros he will be top of the list again next Monday.
So a bit of sadness for me, but also a tick of excitement as we look ahead to the rest of this great tournament. Bring it on!
UPDATE – Match over – Soderling beat Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4
A repeat of last year’s final, this time in the quarterfinals.
Last year, Roger was able to comfortably beat the Swede in straight sets to capture a historic French Open title.
This year, Soderling returns older, wiser and in the form of his life. Although he has been outclassed by Federer in all 12 previous encounters between the two, this will be a tough match for the defending champion. If there is to be a really big upset this year, this could be it.
Still, my money is on the Number One, Roger Federer. I pick it will go to five sets and that he’ll have to really dig deep, but the Swiss has shown he is also in fine form, and seems to have some gas left in the tank based on recent matches.
