With Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both safely into the quarterfinals, this is where things start really heating up.
Rafa will play in the afternoon session, not before 2:30pm local time (6:30pm GMT). He’s never lost to his opponent, Philipp Kohlschreiber in their previous six encounters but it should be noted that each of the three times the pair have met on hard courts, the German has managed to win a set - so don’t count him out today. I pick Nadal in three.
Roger’s match against Tomas Berdych will be a humdinger on many levels. Our Swiss champion will be hungrier then ever to prove he is still a mighty force in this game called tennis, and toavenge the two losses against the Czech in 2010 (Miami and Wimbledon). I pick Federer’s will to see him through, again in three sets.

Roger Federer opens his 2010 US hard court campaign with a first up encounter against the Argentinian veteran Juan Ignacio Chela.
The two have met on four previous occasions, with four comfortable victories for Federer. Should be a good warm up match for Federer to acclimatise.

UPDATE: Match over, the Canadian pair of Vasek Pospisil and Milos Raonic upset Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic by 5-7, 6-3, 10-8.
It is not often that I care too much about doubles matches, but this is a unique opportunity to see the world top two players in this format.
I think it will be a good opportunity to gauge Rafa’s form- after the long layover since Wimbledon it will be interesting to see how he copes with the hard surface and to see his serving and volleying level. Not to mention Nole’s form too as a potential semifinal opponent.

The bad news (if you can call it that) is that with 20 of the world’s top 25 in attendance, there are some mighty good players in the path of either player before that potential final.
The semis could feature Rafael Nadal against defending champ Andy Murray, and Roger Federer could have to battle past his rival for Number Two, Novak Djokovic.
Here are the most probable opponents if all goes to form:
Rafael Nadal
2nd round: Stanislas Wawrinka
3rd round: Sam Querrey
4th round: Andy Roddick
Semifinals: Andy Murray
Finals: Roger Federer
Roger Federer
2nd round: Alejandro Falla
3rd round: Nicolas Almagro
4th round: Tomas Berdych
Semifinals: Novak Djokovic
Finals: Rafael Nadal

Yes, according to the Spanish sports newspaper, Marca, Nole suggested this to Rafa back in London, and the Mallorcan has taken him up on the offer!
Apparently it will be the first time since Jimmy Connors and Arthur Ashe en 1976 that the reigning world No.’s 1 and 2 have joined forces in doubles.
Rafa will be looking to acclimatise to the conditions and get some playing time after a long break. I cannot imagine he will be playing each point in the doubles tourney to the death, but even so I for one will be paying extra attention to this normally overlooked part of the Masters series events.
GO RAFA AND NOLE! Maybe a doubles victory and a head to head singles final would be fitting?
Bad news for those of us hoping for a quick renewal of the rivalry between Nadal and Federer.
Roger Federer looked like he had but an easy cruise into the semis before Tsonga pulled off a miraculous recovery from 5-1 down in the third to take out the match, 7-6 (7/5), 1-6, 7-6 (7/3).
Rafael Nadal was looking competitive in the first set against Del Potro, and one had the feeling that if the first set tie breaker had gone his way, this could have been a great match. But somehow, the gas seemed to run out and the second set was a straightforward affair for the Argentine. Rafa was sent packing – 7-6, 6-1.
Of the two, Roger’s loss was perhaps the more inexplicable as he had looked very good early on.
To make matters worse for the Mallorcan, Andy Murray’s win over Tsonga in the semi meant that the four year Federer/Nadal stranglehold over the one-two positions on the ATP rankings come to an end – and Nadal slips from the top two for the first time since July 2005.
Nadal and Federer have both now moved on to Cincinatti, and Nadal had this to say after his loss:
“It’s normal… After two months out of competition it’s tough to play at that level.”
