I am sure we’d all, with the notable exception (perhaps) of David Ferrer, expected to see Rafa playing Murray here, but instead the Spanish hopes will rest on the man from Alicante.
David Ferrer has played Andy Murray 5 times before, with the honours split depending on surface – Ferrer won all 3 clay court matches and Murray both hard court ones.
Tomas Berdych defeated Marcos Baghdatis and so will face Rafael Nadal in Friday’s semifinal in Abu Dhabi.
In the other 1st round match, Robin Soderling secured his slot in the semifinals by beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He’ll face Roger Federer next.
The final (featuring, we hope, Nadal vs Federer…) will be on Saturday.

The US Open semifinals will be played Saturday, and three of the top four seeds including Nadal and Federer have made it to this great occasion.
It is tempting to write off Mikhail Youzhny given Rafael Nadal‘s run of form and the patchy yet gritty display from the Russian to beat Wawrinka in five sets.
But do not forget that Youzhny has traditionally been a tough opponent for the Spaniard.
Although Nadal leads the head to head 7-4, those four losses all come on hard courts, including a stunning 6-0, 6-1 pasting in Chennai in 2008.

If all had run to form we would be seeing Federer against Murray and Nadal against Djokovic. Of the four, only Nadal managed to keep his date at the main table this year, and he should have a straight forward win over the Austrian veteran Jurgen Melzer.
Roger Federer was of course knocked out by Robin Soderling, who has just beaten Tomas Berdych to repeat his final appearance of last year.
