Roger Federer will face his friend and compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka for a place in the semifinals, but do not expect this to be a gentle hit between mates.
Although Wawrinka has always been in the shadow of his immortal countryman, he has managed to beat him in the past (once, last year, on clay) against five victories for Federer. Still, Federer is playing well and we would expect him to go through.

Well they have taken different paths to get there, but the Roger and Rafa show will get back underway tomorrow in the Shanghai Rolex Masters in China.
While Federer chose to rest and work up his own plan to get back into form, Nadal has played Tokyo and Beijing with a semifinal and a championship, as well as a sharply tuned game to show for his efforts.
Rafael Nadal will begin his attack on one of few Masters tournaments to still escape his grip by playing Roger’s countryman Stanislas Wawrinka. It will be a tough match, but history and form are firmly on the side of the Spaniard, who has not dropped a set in winning all six previous encounters.
Should he negotiate his way past Wawrinka, then possible minefields along the way could include Melzer, Davydenko, Murray before a hopeful final with Federer. All in all an easy run, Davydenko is not in form and Rafa would love to make up for some recent losses to the Russian.
Roger Federer’s first match will be against Isner or Kubot, then Cilic, Soderling, and Djokovic before the final. Ouch, that is a lot of good players to confront after a month cold, hope he can build by the time he gets to Soderling and take it from there.
So who is it to be? Fed to draw back level with Nadal on Masters titles (18)? Nadal to claim his eighth title of a sensational year? Or some other player to come through and steal the glory?
Sure is going to be fun finding out:).

Time – fourth match of the day, probably some time after 3pm local time, 1pm GMT
Roger Federer has played his fellow Swiss, Stanislas Wawrinka five times before, and lost just once. On clay though, they are one apiece and this will be a tough one for the champion.
I expect Federer to pull through, but not before losing at least a set… will be a good one to watch, and a great test for Roger as the business end of the tournament starts.

Rafa faces six foot nine of big serving American John Isner whilst Roger plays fellow countryman, Stanislas Wawrinka.
Both should overcome their challenges.
Nadal was pushed to three sets before finally overcoming Isner at Indian Wells this year, but despite his top 20 ranking, the American has a losing overall record on clay and will struggle against the King of that surface.
Federer has a 3-1 record over Wawrinka, but the number 23 had a crucial win in their only previous clay encounter – at Montecarlo last year.
Stanislas Wawrinka - Link to ATP Profile
That will give him confidence and this will be a total battle which I pick Roger to come through in three sets.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have both won their second round matches at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
Federer played first, and although the match was tight, he won comfortably in the end, defeating local Canadian Frederic Niemeyer 7-6, 6-4. He’ll play fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in the next round.
Nadal looked decidedly patchy against David Ferrer. He broke straight up thanks to a poor initial service game from Ferrer, but then struggled with erratic shots and uncharacteristic errors. He was up 4-3 in the first when some knees gave out – fortunately for Rafa’s it was not his this time – it was his fellow Spaniard instead who succumbed to pain in the joints.
Rafa (and us!) will have been disappointed not to get more match play – he sure looked like he needed time on the courts. But a win is a win, and he’ll be well rested to face Philipp Petzschner of Germany in the next round. 45th ranked Petzschner upset Tommy Robredo today and though on paper it will be an easy match for Rafa, he seems to be on a good streak of form, and the Mallorcan will surely not take anything for granted.
In a statement after today’s exhibition match which he lost to Stanislas Wawrinka (4-6 7-6 (8-6) 10-3 ), Nadal announced he will not be defending his title this year.
Rafa said, “Not to play Wimbledon is one of the toughest decisions in my career but the decision was made easier because I don’t feel ready to compete at 100 percent.”
“I don’t feel like I’m ready to play in a tournament that is as important as Wimbledon.
“I tried everything, I tried hard in the last week to get in the best condition and today was my last test. I didn’t feel terrible but I was not at my best.”
Nadal’s withdrawal leaves Roger Federer in pole position to battle for the title. If he successfully claims the championship, Roger will be Number One again on the ATP rankings – only an outright win will be sufficient to regain this honour.
Nadal has not indicated a likely return date, making it clear that his priority was to return to full health.
Best wishes Rafa, you are still young, and we look forward to seeing you back at full strength and with renewed, pain-free vigour!
Rafael Nadal has received an invitation from the organisers of the Hurlingham Club warm-up event, and responded positively to possibly taking this up.
After having withdrawn from Queens, Rafa is short on grass match time, and has said that he is hoping to play as it would be a ”good test for my knee.”
Let’s hope that this is a positive indication that Nadal’s knee tendonitis is responding favourably to treatment.
Nowadays, surely this is the third best thing… not Nadal vs Federer, but Nadal vs Murray, and not a final but a semifinal. It is going to be quite a match. Murray has the form and run of results, and Rafa, well, will today be the day when his 25 match unbeaten record at Montecarlo is finally broken?
Afternoon play starts at or soon after 13:30 local time today. Nadal will come on after the other semifinal between Djokovic and Wawrinka, so perhaps around 15:30 CEST would be my best bet.

There was little time for play yesterday between the rain showers, but still enough time for the shock of the tournament – the ousting of Federer by his Swiss compatriot, Stanislas Wawrinka. Oh, oh, oh. At least Roger should now be able to enjoy a honeymoon off the courts.
Today Nadal could face a very tough schedule, opponents and weather allowing. He’ll be first on the main court this morning, to see if can overcome the veteran Ecuadorean, Nicolas Lapentti, against who he is currently one (service game) to zero down. (Update: Nadal won 6-3, 6-0 in just 1:32. Good!)
If he manages to pull through, he’ll then face the winner of Bolelli or Ljubicic later in the afternoon to try and win through to the semifinal tomorrow (Update- Ljubicic won in a little under 2 hours, so he will play Rafa).
