Roger Federer vs Santiago Giraldo, second match of evening session, probably after 8pm local time (midnight GMT)
If their hopes ever faded given the recent form of Djokovic and Murray, surely Rafa and Roger should be pleased with the draws handed to them for the US Open.
The US Open tennis 2011 mens singles draw is out, and here are the potential opponents (based on seed/form) that our two champions would have to beat before meeting each other in an eventual final:
Rafael Nadal:
1st Round: Andrey Golubev
2nd Round: Nicolas Mahut
3rd Round: Ivan Ljubicic
4th Round: Jurgen Melzer
Quarterfinal: David Ferrer
Semifinal: Andy Murray
Final: Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer
Roger Federer:
1st Round: Santiago Giraldo
2nd Round: Thomaz Bellucci
3rd Round: Marin Cilic
4th Round: Viktor Troicki
Quarterfinal: Mardy Fish
Semifinal: Novak Djokovic
Final: Rafael Nadal
At Montreal, Nadal went out in his first match and Federer in his second. Can anyone even remember that happening before?
I think that at the first Masters event of the North America tour most of us expected repeat semifinals featuring the top four of Djokovic, Nadal, Federer and Murray.
But just a few days in, and three of the four have been sent packing. Only Nole is still standing.
So with Federer yet to win a Major or Masters in 2011, and Djokovic almost unbeatable, can we pronounce the Nadal and Federer era definitively dead?
Well, in the sense of two players totally dominating a sport, as Roger and Rafa did from 2006-2010, probably, yes, that history making epoch has ended.
It’s been a great run, and in the future we will probably look back and be amazed how long it lasted rather than at how it inevitably faded to an end. We’ll treasure forever the great memories including the incredible Wimbledon, French and Australian Open finals and unique friendship in rivalry .
But in another sense, we can hope that the era still has some legs.
Federer has another Major or two in him, and although we will see more downs than we have been spoiled to experience in the past, there will still be the ups – to savour not just for rarity, but especially for the grit and skill that will be needed to beat younger upstarts.
And Nadal is far from a done force. Provided he can manage his calendar to limit the pounding on his body, we can expect to see a more dosified and focussed Rafa sharpening his game to face the new challenge that is Novak Djokovic. I think we can hope for a minimum of 4 or 5 more good years, highlighted by many great matches with the Serb, as well as a few scorchers still with Roger, Andy and some yet-to-be-discovered young talents.
So for now, I’m putting this Montreal disappointment behind me, and looking forward to see our champs rested and back in the game come Cincinnati and Flushing Meadows.
Why is it that so many fans of Federer resent the success of Nadal, and vice versa?
I wish they could take a leaf out of Roger’s book…
Read the comments that Federer made after losing to Novak Djokovic in the US Open semifinal yesterday.
Asked about Nadal’s chances to complete a career Grand Slam, he answered:
“I won’t watch, but I hope he wins. It’s great for tennis, and it’s great for him at the young age he is to have that opportunity already.
I don’t know when I had my first opportunity in Paris, how old I was, but my guess would be that he’s younger. It doesn’t really matter if he’s younger or not. It’s a matter of can he make it, and chances are good now, especially that Novak is so tired and Rafa has been playing so well.”
Roger says he won’t watch the match:
“I’ve been around tennis for weeks and weeks and weeks right now. Last thing I want to do is watch another tennis match where I’m not a part of.
I will spend some time with my kids and take it easy, maybe go shopping. I don’t know if shops are open here in New York Sundays, but I’m sure something is open. We’ll see.”
It takes a true champion, confident and satisfied with his own personal achievements to not resent the success of others.
And did you spot that his last little remark about shopping?
A subtle reminder that this is the first time in eight years that he has been free on Final’s Sunday in New York .
Well we did not quite get what we’d hoped for – two match points for Fed were as close as we could get to the dreamed of Nadal vs Federer final.
But let’s face it, the best man won on the day and this Nadal vs Djokovic is going to be fascinating!
The two have met 21 times before, with Nadal leading the head to head by 14-7. But that hides a crucial piece of information – Nadal has only won 3 of the 10 matches when they have played on hard courts.
That said, I believe Nadal will win today. Firstly he wants it so very much, and very little stops Nadal when it is time to step up and make history. Secondly, this is the “new Nadal” and he will win more “cheap” service points than in past matches. And thirdly, Nadal arrives in better, fresher condition than a Djokovic who must turn up less than 24 hours after taking five sets to knock off the great Roger Federer.
I predict Nadal to win in four sets. And that I won’t blink for more than three hours .

Matches over, Nadal beat Youzhny 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 and Djokovic beat Federer 7-5, 1-6, 7-5, 2-6, 5-7
The US Open semifinals will be played Saturday, and three of the top four seeds including Nadal and Federer have made it to this great occasion.
It is tempting to write off Mikhail Youzhny given Rafael Nadal‘s run of form and the patchy yet gritty display from the Russian to beat Wawrinka in five sets.
But do not forget that Youzhny has traditionally been a tough opponent for the Spaniard.
Although Nadal leads the head to head 7-4, those four losses all come on hard courts, including a stunning 6-0, 6-1 pasting in Chennai in 2008.
I pick Rafa in four. UPDATE – Match over, Nadal won 6-2, 6-3, 6-4
Novak Djokovic
Roger Federer will play Novak Djokovic in the other tasty encounter of the day.
Roger leads the head to head 10 to 5 but they have traded blow in recent years, and really it could go either way.
I pick Roger to battle through in five. UPDATE – Match over, Djokovic won 7-5, 1-6, 7-5, 2-6, 5-7

Rafael Nadal will have to beat his fellow Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco if he is to claim a spot in the semifinals.
Roger Federer already booked his slot in the semis last night (beating Soderling in straight sets) so that means we are just three matches away from the anticipated Nadal vs Federer final!
On paper, Nadal should beat Verdasco, as he has on all ten previous occasions that the two met. But those of us who remember the epic Aussie Open semifinal of 2009 know that Verdasco has it in him to run Nadal very hard indeed. I pick Nadal to battle through in four.

Roger Federer vs Robin Soderling – I’m really looking forward to this match, as I know Federer will come out very aggressively to avenge his loss in Roland Garros.
That was the only time the Swede has been able to beat Federer in 13 matches – let’s see how things go tonight but I pick Roger to battle through in five sets.
Going to be so much fun!
